The sail from the Saints across to Guadeloupe
(the island shaped like a butterfly) was a pleasant sail on just the
genoa, but as we approached the south west corner of Guadeloupe the wind picked
up – we recorded 36 knots (force 8) with quite a choppy sea. When we went
for drinks later on “Spray” when we were tied up in Deshais, Ian’s friend Bill
who had joined them in St Lucia, lives in Barbados and has a boat delivery
business, said he had never seen the conditions we experienced off the island
before. As we sailed up the east coast, we had lots of wind, no wind, and
wind from a completely different direction. We anchored in Deshais for the
night. This anchorage has a reputation for strong winds as it acts as a
vent for easterly winds – and it was quite a blowy night, but our anchor was
well and truly in so we could sleep
soundly. |
