Decided to air the bikes after months of non-use. The original batteries died years ago, in the US and F replaced them with very small Bosch power-tool packs (just for the hills) and they hadn’t been used for at least two years. So bikes, batteries and ourselves got some badly needed exercise!
The 2 mile cycle path along the coast to the next town Vila de Conde, at the mouth of the River Ave had been recommended and well worth the trip.
Passed the Monument to the shipwrecked
Then the Fort of São João Baptista, construction started in the 1570s to defend the river mouth from pirate attacks.
Then allegedly the oldest church in Portugal, first mentioned in 1059, The Chapel of Our Lady of Guidance. Before the construction of the fort, the chapel defended the river bar.
