Walked up through the town admiring the sights en route to the supermarket. Praia is very bright and open, unlike Angra with its narrow streets. The lowlands of this side of the island produced large quantities of wheat and created wealth which is reflected in the many fine houses.
The Liberty Statue is in the main square, erected on the first centenary of the 1829 battle. The attractive town hall overlooks it.

Beyond the square is the parish church, the Santa Cruz church founded by one of the first settlers; it has a 15th Century Gothic doorway.

Wandered on up to Continente, our go-to supermarket and returned with a rucksack each, to keep us going for a couple of days. Bought a couple of mini buckets of yogurt (heavy). We learnt our lesson - buy things when we see them, otherwise they’re gone and there’s a long wait for the next container ship. As per the oil for the hydraulic steering in Ponta D. “I’ll get it tomorrow” then an ARC skipper bought the lot!!!
Also don’t just start to load up the next taxi which turns up as it may have been booked by that very irate lady looking for a fight. Despite a high level of diplomacy and an immediate, tactical withdrawal she was still shouting as the taxi pulled away.
