After another day in Isafordur, putting Lorna on
her plane home and meeting Helgur and Sigrit we set off in the evening and spent
a couple of hours motoring back round to Bolungarvik.
We cleared customs before we left Isafjordur, the
customs officer was on a day off, but a couple of policemen came on board and
stamped bits of paper. We explained that we would go into small harbours
on the way down the Iceland coast but wanted to head out for Greenland when
things were favourable. It all seemed OK.
I had a long chat with the skipper of Aurora, an
Icelandic charter yacht, previously one of Robin Knox Johnson's round the world
fleet.
They have been across to Greenland and up
to Jan Mayen Island. He ran a small fishing fleet in Newfoundland so
knew that area as well. We looked at the ice and weather websites, where
everything looks as good as could be hoped. He suggested going through the
passages inside Cape Farwell (Cap Farvel). If the weather is suitable that
looks a splendid route.
A couple of days down the Icelandic coast are
planned before setting out for Greenland. This should give Helgur and
Sigrit an idea of what awaits them.
Today we are rolling downwind in bright sunshine,
perhaps life will always be like this.
