We arrived here after motoring back across the
fjord. Again we stopped the engine as we came out of Jokulfirdir and
this time were rewarded by the PSHSHH of a whale blowing close
inshore. We sailed towards it, but eventually it then turned out to sea
astern of us. We later saw two more series of blows in separate
areas and a pair of porpoises surfaced briefly within sight. The whales
were blowing 3 or 4 times and then sounding for longer, but not showing their
tails when they dived.
![]() We motored on across here, a fishing harbour today visited the natural history museum and
had a swim.
Talking to people at the museum we decided that the
whales that Adam had photographed so diligently were humpbacks and the
previous day's whales were minkes. The right and bowhead whales have no
dorsal fin, but the humpbacks have the small one we saw. The
colouring in our book is misleading, but the Icelandic books were quite
clear.
