After dodging icebergs we anchored in 10m at the head of Tuttulik Fjord in calm conditions and blue skies. Some bergs were quite spectacular to me as this is my first visit to high latitudes in this area. Colour ranged from white to a deep turquoise blue. The bergs are drifting south on the East Greenland current but frequently get driven into the fjords by easterly winds.

We all went ashore in the dinghy for rifle lessons for those of us who hadn’t used one before (me). Every shore party is armed due to the risk of polar bears however small the risk. We returned to Umiak slowly as we had to paddle due to the outboard not starting. Upon investigation by our resident engineer guru Nigel, he found there was water in the fuel. The outboard was brought back onboard for a carb strip down and a clean of the fuel system.

I volunteered to do the anchor watch while the rest went back ashore to the head of the fjord for an afternoon walk up the hill to the north of us above our anchorage. Mike elected to do some fishing in the stream that emptied into the fjord. He came back with 2 arctic char which fed us all that evening. Delicious!
