This has got to be one of great trips that can be made into a major city by yacht.  It also requires a little planning as the state of the tide is critical to a good passage.  Once again we were blessed with excellent bright weather and a time of slack water at Hells Gate of 11:30, so a positively civilised departure from Port Washington at precisely 09:20, not 0919 or 0921!

The chart shows the route from Port Washington in the top right passed the prison on Rikers Island through Hells Gate where we the Harlem River joins the East River and then down the east side of Manhattan.  We took an excursion up the Hudson River to show off the views and covered 32nm in all ending up in the Liberty Landings Marina in New Jersey.

Avoiding tugs pushing barges is all part of the game

Especially for Darren and Caroline at he Five Bells – well travelled beer and the Empire State Building
