We left Kupang this morning and set sail for Rinca and Kumodo in search of the dragons-----it is 240 miles and will take about two days.
For those sailing into Indonesian waters our advice based on our experience is as follows:
1. From Fiji or Australia contact Napa Rachman (Kupang Yacht Service) and ask him to arrange CAIT and give him ETA Kupang.
2. When in Darwin go the Indonesian Consul and apply for personal visas----you cannot do this on line as they will not accept copy email documents. They need your actual passport. This takes 4 working days to process.
3. When you have a more precise ETA in Kupang contact Napa.
4. He will meet you on the beach and take your passports and papers and deal with Quarantine, Immigration, Customs and Port Authority in that order and will make the necessary payments to ensure ''cooperation'' !! This will take about half a day. Try and avoid Saturdays and Sundays and Friday afternoons.
His contact details are:
Napa Rachman
Kupang Yacht Service
Jl. Nuri 1 No 8 Bonipoi Kupang Timor
NTT Indonesia
Phone +62 62380 823159
Mobile 081339412321 (presumably +62 81339412321 if not using a local phone)
email: kupang_service {CHANGE TO AT} yahoo {DOT} com

Using this method will avoid contact with Customs and Napa essentially will ensure you have no problems with bonds---he seems to give the guarantee/exemption.
Expect to pay Napa about 150,000 rupiah, quarantine 300,000 rupiah, customs 200,000 rupiah, port authority 150,000 rupiah, and Immigration no payment. (15,500 rupiah to the £). Camelot who we are sailing with paid the same amount.
If you are part of a rally eg Sail Indonesia or the Darwin to Ambon race/rally then they do the paperwork and bond exemptions for you. However there are over 100 boats in the Sail Indonesia rally and we are relieved not to be part of it as that number of people swamp these small islands and communities.
Things change all the time so do keep checking.
